Silage tips: The DO’S and DON’T’S at feed-out

There are different ways of ensiling forage. When using the clamp or bunker method, be sure to respects some basics in order to avoid aerobic losses and preserve your forage quality.

DO DON’T
  • Use a block cutter / sheer grab / defacer
  • Remove loose silage from face
  • Keep a tidy clamp / pile face
  • Only remove silage to be fed
  • Only remove silage when it is to be fed
  • Remove layers of 20 cm+ to avoid heating if possible
  • Use a bucket
  • Leave discard silage near the clamp
  • have an uneven face
  • Unroll the top plastic for more than 2 days feeding
  • Roll the plastic back over the face
  • Try to cross the face over no longer than 3 days period to minimize aerobic losses
